Neurofeedback is a form of biofeedback that focuses on brainwaves. It is used to regulate brain activity, calm anxiety and hyperactivity, and improve attention, focus, and mood.
What is Neurofeedback?
Neurofeedback teaches you to quiet brainwaves associated with low performance and increase brainwaves associated with optimal function. We observe your brain in action by monitoring your brainwaves with EEG sensors. We show you your brain activity and help you to change it by rewarding a more appropriate and stable brain state. Much like the way physical exercise strengthens and develops specific muscles, neurofeedback helps your brain to strengthen patterns of brainwave activity that keep it regulated, calm, and focused. Neurofeedback teaches your brain to self-regulate, enhancing stability and improving long-term function.
How is Neurofeedback done?
An initial assessment is done by the clinician that involves QEEG brain mapping and/or a series of questionnaires. Once the assessment is complete, we work with you to define a treatment plan. Treatment typically takes place twice per week in 30 minute sessions. During treatment, sensors are attached to the scalp with EEG paste. The EEG reads your brainwaves. It is painless and does not involve any voltage or current to the brain, so it is entirely non-invasive. A computer process the brain activity so you can see how your brain is doing in real time. The clinician may include a movie or game, and instruct you on how to view the movie or play the game using only your brainwaves (everyone can do it!). The specific brainwave frequencies that are rewarded and the sensor locations on the scalp are dependent upon initial assessments and the areas of function that you are working on.
What About Medications?
Neurofeedback can take place together with psychopharmacological intervention With successful neurofeedback training, medication targeting may no longer be needed or may be needed in lower dosages, as the brain takes over the role of self-regulation. We strive to work closely and cooperatively with prescribing doctors in coordinating about your treatment.

Training your brain has far reaching benefits. Neurofeedback is rated a Level I "Best Support" by the American Academy of Pediatrics for it's effectiveness in improving calm focus for children with ADHD. It is also helpful for many people in addressing concussion, memory, insomnia, anxiety, depression, autism, and more recently is being explored in the are of complex trauma. Neurofeedback has been used successfully by professional athletes to enhance peak performance. NASA uses neurofeedback to train astronauts, the U.S. Military uses it to train Special Forces, and Business Executives use it to improve job performance as well as for personal health and well-being. |
