Wavelengths Psychology Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Clinical Private Practice

Wavelengths Psychology is accepting applications now for psychology postdoctoral fellows for the 2023-2024 year to join our team of psychologists, social workers, and mental health counselors in the field of clinical private practice.

The Postdoctoral Fellowship in Clinical Private Practice is a one-year, full-time program or two-year, part-time program offered in our Long Island, NY locations of Garden City and Massapequa Park.  We are a full-service practice providing clinical treatment, assessment, and neurofeedback to individuals, couples, families, and groups for clients ages three-adult. We provide weekly supervision, didactics, and staff meetings, as well as front desk services and full billing support. We also offer a unique opportunity to learn about the business of private practice.

As our practice is open evenings and weekends, our part-time  option is ideal for recent graduates who need to balance their fellowship with family or with other employment.

Our program meets requirements for licensing as a psychologist in New York State. The program is NOT currently accredited by the APA.

Our program follows the scientist-practitioner model of training, with the goal of producing graduates who have advanced skills in clinical private practice with a variety of patient populations. Areas of training and experience include ethics, crisis intervention, HIPAA compliance and documentation, psycho-educational assessment, and evidence-based clinical intervention with outpatient clients ages three-adult.  In addition, fellows are exposed to the workings of a private practice, including practice set-up, marketing, insurance company basics, outreach, public relations, and electronic health records.
Fellows interested in neurofeedback certification will be provided the necessary supervision and training in order qualify for board certification in neurofeedback by the end of the fellowship. Training consists of didactics, clinical experiences and supervision.  Fellows spend approximately 65% of their time providing clinical services to patients, 20% in training and supervision, and 15% in private practice leadership.

Clinical Training

Post-Doctoral fellows will have the opportunity to provide weekly therapy with individuals, couples, families, and groups, and conduct psychological evaluations. Fellows will also be be given the opportunity to train in neurofeedback and provide neurofeedback with clients. Fellows will have the opportunity to lead didactics and provide group supervision for psychology and/or mental health counseling trainees.

Fellows spend approximately 65% of their time providing clinical services to patients in our offices in Garden City and in Massapequa Park. Outpatient clinical services provided by fellows includes:

  • Clinical Interventions and treatment (short-or long-term) including psychotherapy, telehealth, and play therapy.
  • Psychological Assessment
  • Consultation
  • Neurofeedback

Through clinical training, our fellows develop a variety of skills, including those related to:

  • Therapeutic Interventions
  • Psychological evaluations
  • Family  and school interventions
  • Crisis Intervention

Clinical Supervision

Supervision is the primary training modality for development of professional expertise in assessment, treatment, and consultation.  Supervision takes place with our licensed staff psychologists.

Clinical supervision occurs both on a scheduled and case-focused basis. During the program, post-doctoral fellows receive a minimum of one hour per week of regularly scheduled, face-to-face individual supervision for clinical intervention, one hour per week of assessment supervision when applicable, and one hour weekly of group supervision. Supervision hours may be pro-rated for part-time fellows.

In addition, fellows receive group supervision through the clinical case seminars embedded into the didactics program, which follow a case conference format where fellows receive input and feedback on treatment cases from licensed therapists and fellow trainees.

Business and Leadership

Fellows spend approximately 15% of their time in activities related to leadership and business strategies for sucessfully engaging in a private practice.  These activities include learning basic business concepts, marketing, creating and maintaining client and community connections, practice operations from intake to termination, information regarding insurance rules and compliance, ethics in private practice, HIPAA compliancy, crisis intervention, appropriate documentation, and program development. Fellows work closely with supervisors and may choose to shadow and learn from all aspects of the business.

Postdoctoral  training is designed to help fellows build the confidence and skills to eventually move forward with working for or opening up their own private practice. Activities include reading recommended books and articles focused on the business aspect of running a private practice, actively engaging in marketing and community outreach, shadowing and introduction to the intake and billing process, and engaging in training regarding topics such as HIPAA compliancy, ethics, supervision, and program development.  Fellows will also have the opportunity to attend a monthly open forum luncheon with the owner and staff members to learn more about private practice and ask questions.

Benefits

Full-time fellows receive an annual stipend of $35,000 paid every two weeks, 15 vacation days, 5 sick days, and time off for six major holidays per year. Health, vision, and dental insurances are also provided.  Part-time post doctoral fellows (20 hours weekly) receive the same benefits pro-rated.  Fellows have the opportunity to receive the training, supervision and experience required for certification in Neurofeedback and to participate in an extensive offering of free or low-cost psychology trainings offered by the local professional resorces on Long Island.  Fellows are invited to attend a monthly open forum luncheon with the practice owner and staff to discuss relevant issues related to opening and running a private practice.

Each post-doctoral fellow is provided with access to front desk support, billing support, electronic health records, and on-call supervisor support during working hours. Fellows are provided with office space and any other necessary materials required to fulfill their clinical responsibilities.

Requirements

Fellows are required to have graduated with a doctoral degree in a clinical, counseling, or school psychology program. Applicants with experience or a proven interest in working with clients throughout the life span including children and teens will be given stronger consideration.  Evening and weekend hours are required to accomodate working families and school-aged children.
