The Pre-Doctoral Psychology Internship is a one-year, full-time program or two-year, part-time program offered in our Long Island, NY locations of Garden City and Massapequa Park. This program is available to matriculated doctoral students in clinical, counseling, and school psychology programs. We are a full-service practice providing clinical treatment, assessment, and neurofeedback to individuals, couples, families, and groups for clients ages three-adult. We provide two hours of weekly individual supervision (one hour clinical, one hour assessment), as well as weekly didactics and staff meetings. We also offer a unique opportunity to become certified in neurofeedback and learn about the business of private practice.
As our practice is open evenings and weekends, our internship is ideal for interns who need to balance their fellowship with family or with other employment.
Our program adheres to the APA ethics code and meets requirements for licensing as a psychologist in New York State. The program is NOT currently accredited by the APA.
Our program follows the scientist-practitioner model of training, with the goal of producing graduates who have advanced skills with a variety of patient populations. Areas of training and experience include ethics, crisis intervention, HIPAA compliance and documentation, psychological assessment, and evidence-based clinical intervention with outpatient clients ages three-adult. Interns interested in neurofeedback certification will be provided the necessary supervision and training in order qualify for board certification in neurofeedback by the end of their internship. Training consists of didactics, clinical experiences and supervision. Interns spend approximately 65% of their time providing clinical services to patients, 20% in training and supervision, and 15% in private practice leadership.

Training Philosophy
Our clinical training is based on the scientist-practitioner model, providing interns with in-depth clinical experience which becoms increasingly complex over the course of the year. This model encourages receptivity to multiple approaches to a problem, empirically supported approaches tempered by skepticism and critical inquiry, professional responsibility, and lifelong learning. In addition, we explore ongoing awareness of personal biases and their impact on observation, the consideration of the ethical implications of interventions, and we hold collegial interaction and feedback in high regard. The model captures our program's inclusion of a multiplicity of treatment modalities and methods, as well as extensive supervision (often involving videotaped or observed sessions) to cultivate the intern's observational skills, including those which are self-reflective.
Through close clinical supervision, seminars, and collaborative outreach work with multi-disciplinary treatment teams in local schools, hospitals, and agencies, interns are trained to provide theoretically sound clinical services to children, adolescents and families. Interns learn clinical interventions which are grounded in the latest research and literature in the field of psychology.
The primary aim of our training program is to develop or enhance our interns’ basic competencies in the delivery of a variety of psychological services in an outpatient setting, including basic competencies in the following: Ethical and Legal Standards; Individual and Cultural Diversity; Professional Values, Attitudes, and Behaviors; Research and Evidence-based Intervention; Communication; Interpersonal Skills; Assessment; Consultation; and Interprofessional/Interdisciplinary Skills.
Clinical Training
Psychology Interns will have the opportunity to provide weekly therapy for individuals, couples, families, and groups, and conduct a minimum of six supervised psychological evaluations over the course of their training. Interns will also be provided with training in neurofeedback and conduct neurofeedback sessions with clients. Interns attend two hours of supervision, one hour of staff meeting, and one hour of didactics weekly. Additional opportunities for training include group supervision and an extensive offering of free or low-cost psychology trainings offered by the local professional resorces on Long Island.

During the program, psychology inters receive a minimum of one hour per week of regularly scheduled, face-to-face individual supervision for clinical intervention and one hour per week of assessment supervision. Supervision hours may be pro-rated for part-time interns.
In addition, interns receive group supervision through the clinical case seminars embedded into the didactics program, which follow a case conference format where fellows receive input and feedback on treatment cases from licensed therapists and fellow trainees.
