by Melissa Marconi, LMSW Why do I keep hearing about “identifying core values”? You might have noticed a rise in discussion around “identifying values” in social media/self-help platforms lately. Several treatment modalities such as CBT and ACT emphasized clarifying values to guide decision-making, set goals, and build on clients’ strengths. I have found when I incorporate values exploration into my practice, my clients become more self-aware and self-compassionate. They are often better able to identify practical goals and improve challenges connected to family, work, relationships, spirituality, and other life domains. What are values? Values are what you believe are important and necessary in your life. When you identify your values, you are defining what type of person you want to become and what you stand for. Your values can help give you direction toward a meaningful life. For instance, if you value family yet spend most of your time at work, you may fill unsatisfied and unhappy. Conversely, if you value family and set goals to spend quality time with family you may feel fulfilled. How do we identify values? The internet has several free resources to help you identify your core values. One excellent resource is from the website therapist aid.com which has several worksheets on values (see resources below). Create goals based on your values. After you identify your values you can begin to list activities in your life that support or promote your values. Some important questions to ask might be: Do you spend most of your energy supporting the things you most value? How can you create goals that connect with what matters to you most? What are you currently doing that improves your life in the long run? What do you want to start or do more of? What life-enriching goals do you want to achieve? What life enhancing actions do you want to take? What life improving skills would you like to develop? Your therapist can help you set realistic goals and assist with barriers/obstacles in achieving these goals.
